I could fly away
Leave for good today
To a new world somewhere far beyond
Or you could set sail
For the sun’s fading trail
And I could watch you till you’re gone

But it wouldn’t matter now
No it couldn’t change what I see
If a thousand miles lay between us today
You’re still at the heart of me

If your face can’t be
Ever here before me
I can always hold you in my mind
And live in the past
Your ghost gave up at last
More real now than passing time

But it wouldn’t matter now
It couldn’t change what I see
If a thousand miles lay between us today
You’re still at the heart of me

Time’s been a shroud
And it’s left me confused
Surrendered to pain in the name of a truth
That sang in my ear all that I stood to lose
Come what may

Our faith is a well
And down deep I can tell
I’m as thirsty as a mortal can be
Silence abounds
And it’s ringing through town
Like a bell swinging high over me

And it wouldn’t matter now
No it couldn’t change what I see
If a thousand miles lay between us today
You’re still at the heart of me

If a thousand miles lay between us today
You’re still at the heart of me

Co-wrote 'Holy War' with (and for ) Chely Wright

Perhaps it is fitting
The sky heavy and spitting at the ground
The sun hid above us
With a grip on my breath it had found
I’d let it out slow as you stood to go
And it rose high just as I slipped down
Then I whispered your name
Knowing well you would not turn around

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light

I want to let go of
All I think I know of how
Our story unwinds
And might turn back to find us somehow
We’ve both turned away
When wisdom would say
We’ve squandered forgiveness and time
And all they would allow
If I could offer both of us mine

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light

What held us together
Lay like a feather in my hand
Not enough weight now for flight
Or the freedom to land
We each take from the other
Now struggle is all that we share
It’s less than I am
And more than I think I can bear

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light
But I mean to leave on the light

Co-wrote 'See me home' with (and for ) Chely Wright

I don’t need a moon that’s full
To feel its curse, its weight, its pull
And I don’t need the riverbed
To push my dreams above my head
And I don’t need the falling day
To find me on the floor this way
Where reason turns its face away
But I might need you soon
To see me home

I don’t know how the rising tide
Has crawled my knees and found my side
I don’t know how it knows my name
Or the reaching shadow of my frame
I don’t know why it’s come to call
And steals the color from the wall
Then sweeps us both out in the hall
But I know I’ll need you soon
To see me home

Take my hand
Walk me through the valley
I’ll fear not, with the sun to warm my face
There we’ll stand
In the light of all that shall be
Knowing home has never been a place

Something has come over me
Rolled a stone away and free
Scratched a word into the sand
With something still here in my hand
It’s something neither you nor I
While dark has slipped beneath the skies
It’s lit a lamp behind our eyes
And I know I’ll need you soon
To see me home
Oh I know I’ll need you soon
To see me home
